What is Skin Resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is a minimally-invasive treatment that removes the dead, dull outer layer of skin to reveal the fresh, more youthful skin below. Skin resurfacing also triggers the production of collagen, which results in a natural rejuvenation as the body rebuilds the skin structure from within.

Skin resurfacing targets and improves a number of different skin concerns, including fine lines, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and other blemishes. At the same time, it tightens the skin and helps to balance the skin tone.

This treatment can be performed with a variety of chemical peels at various intensities or with CO2 laser treatments.

Superficial (Light) Chemical Peels

Superficial chemical peels, also known as “lunchtime peels,” are perfect for patients who desire brighter and rejuvenated skin with no downtime.  They are applied in the office by our expert aesthetician with no discomfort.  We offer a variety of medical grade chemical peels that are designed to treat mild sun damage and to maintain the skin’s youthful appearance.

Medium Chemical Peels

Medium depth chemical peels are perfect for those who are showing signs of moderate sun damage.  At Ponsky & Frankel Facial Plastic Surgery, we prefer the 89% phenol, 30 to 35% TCA (trichloroacetic acid) or Jessner peel to treat mild wrinkles and uneven pigmentation.

The healing time after these procedures is about 7 days, with post-procedural redness for 4-6 weeks that can be easily covered with makeup.  Medium depth peels can be applied by Dr. Ponsky and Dr. Frankel in the office setting to treat focal brown spots and other small areas, such as around the eyes or mouth.

Deep Chemical Peels and CO2 Laser Resurfacing

These techniques of skin resurfacing revitalize skin following years of moderate to significant sun exposure.  By stimulating collagen reorganization and eliminating discoloration, deep chemical peels and laser resurfacing improve the color, texture, and elasticity of skin.

Small areas, such as around the eyes or mouth, can be treated in the office with a deep chemical peel.  For treatment of the entire face, Dr. Ponsky and Dr. Frankel perform the procedure with the patient in a deep “twilight” type of sedation.

There is mild discomfort for about 8 hours after the procedure.  Recovery times range between 7-10 days, and then post-procedural redness can be hidden with concealing makeup.  The results are dramatic and last as long as further sun exposure is avoided.

Procedure Details for a Phenol Peel

You should arrive at your appointment well hydrated. Before the phenol peel begins, you will be given an anesthetic (nerve block and/or local injections) to help minimize discomfort. Full-face phenol peels are performed with patients under deep twilight anesthesia. Your skin will be cleansed of makeup and oils so that the peel can work more efficiently. The phenol solution will then be brushed onto the skin Dr. Frankel monitors the progress. As the chemical works, “frosting” will occur. This means that your skin will turn white as the phenol exfoliates and removes impurities. This white frosted area will later turn red. Your skin may also be cooled during treatment to keep you comfortable. Once the frost disappears, a soothing topical cream will be applied to the peeled areas.

About the CO2 Laser

Our CO2 laser removes layers of damaged skin using powerful laser light in order to greatly improve the skin. Such conditions can be treated as wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin tone and texture, scars, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation. The laser also stimulates new collagen growth, which makes the skin firmer, plumper, and smoother.

CO2 Laser Procedure Details

It’s important to avoid sun exposure for at least one month before your CO2 laser treatment. Be diligent about hats, scarves, and sunscreen when outside. During treatment, your eyes will be covered with protective eyewear to keep them safe from the laser light. The type of anesthesia we use will depend on how severe your skin condition is. The laser energy will be closely monitored to keep you safe, and patients compare the feeling of the laser to “pins and needles”. The deeper the treatment, the more discomfort there will be. Your skin will also be numbed beforehand.
