Let the World See Your Eyes Sparkle

As the focal point of our faces, the eyes are indeed the windows to the soul. Sadly, though, as our faces lose elasticity and begin to age, one of the first things to happen is a drooping or hooding of the eyelids — or puffy eye bags begin to form beneath the eyes. Besides making you look older and more tired, this condition can sometimes become so bad that it interferes with your vision.

To combat this condition and restore a more youthful appearance, Dr. Frankel offers eyelid surgery in Cleveland (also known as a blepharoplasty or eyelid lift). Patients love how their eyes are opened up after blepharoplasty, and how they appear more awake and refreshed. They no longer look tired and have less of a need to spend a lot of time applying concealer.

Eyelid Surgery Details

Dr. Frankel personalizes eyelid surgery in Cleveland specifically to each individual, tailoring the procedure to meet the individual’s needs. He pays meticulous attention to detail in order to avoid an unnatural appearance.

Under most circumstances, blepharoplasty can be performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia, but may also be performed under twilight sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s preference. Dr. Frankel does the vast majority of lower eyelid surgeries using incisions that are hidden on the inside of the eyelid, without skin incisions. He avoids outdated techniques, which can often result in unnatural and less youthful-looking outcomes.

Upper eyelid surgery alone can typically be performed with local numbing (anesthetic) and light oral sedation. The upper eyelid incisions are hidden within the natural skin crease and are often difficult to see even one week after surgery, once the sutures are removed.

Dr. Frankel uses a variety of techniques — especially for the lower eyelids, depending on the patient’s anatomy and tissue characteristics — to achieve the best result for the individual patient. The procedure time for blepharoplasty averages between 1-2 hours.

Recovery

Most patients can go home after their eyelid surgery, and many are frequently surprised with how little pain they have during recovery. Pain is minimal, with only mild discomfort from swelling and bruising.

Generally speaking, patients return to work within a week and are able to perform normal activities after about 10 days. There may be some bruising around the eye area, but it can be easily camouflaged with makeup.

Patients may be seen the day after surgery for a follow-up. If a certain technique of lower blepharoplasty is used (fat transposition), patients are seen 3-5 days after surgery for removal of a small bolster which is hidden by surgical tape. All patients are seen 6-7 days after surgery, at which time any remaining skin sutures are removed. Patients are then seen one month after surgery, three months after surgery, and six months after surgery. Results are typically final at around six months.

Tips for Eyelid Recovery

Give Yourself Time to Rest and Recover

While the recovery period after eyelid surgery is not particularly difficult, it’s still important to allow your body time to recuperate and heal. Have a friend or family member help you with your usual tasks, and stock the fridge ahead of time with easy meals and snacks.

Get plenty of sleep each night, and take the time for a nap when you need it. Getting enough sleep is a crucial part of your healing process and helps to speed up your recovery.

Follow Your Doctor’s Advice

We will give you aftercare instructions to follow for the first few days, including using ice packs on your eyes, sleeping with your head elevated, using prescription eye drops or ointments, and other important instructions to help ensure your healing goes smoothly.

For the following two weeks, do not wear contacts, do not smoke, and do not take any blood-thinning medication or supplements.

Be Gentle With Your Eyes

Avoid screen time on your phone, computer, or TV, and reading, as these activities can dry out and strain the eyes.

Avoid wind, sun, or dust. If you have to go out during your recovery period, wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes from the sun and wind.

Don’t play sports or do anything else that is strenuous.  Beyond potentially injuring your eye during this important healing period, too much activity increases blood flow and can cause more bleeding.

Don’t Stress

Your eyelids will look puffy, your incisions will look red, and there will be swelling and bruising. Remember, this is completely normal. Don’t stress or worry about suddenly looking like you have a black eye! Relax and let your body heal, and the results will begin to appear quickly as the swelling and bruising die down over the next couple of weeks.

Is blepharoplasty safe?

How much does eyelid surgery at Frankel Facial Plastic Surgery cost?

The cost ranges from around $2,700-$3,500 for only upper or lower eyelid surgery. When combined, the range is closer to $5,000-$6,000. This does not include anesthesia or facility fees.

Will I look natural afterward?

Yes. The advanced techniques Dr. Frankel uses allow for beautiful and natural-looking results that look great for decades.

What other procedures go well with eyelid surgery?

For patients who have noticed the circles under their eyes getting worse with age, they may be experiencing a loss of cheek volume. These patients may benefit from cheek augmentation with fillers or fat transfer. Patients who have excessive hooding or a low eyebrow position may benefit from procedures such as a brow lift. Excess skin laxity of the lower eyelids can be addressed with a skin pinch (the removal of extra skin with an incision hidden under the lashes) or with skin resurfacing.

Is blepharoplasty safe?

Yes, this is a very safe procedure in the hands of a highly trained, skilled, experienced surgeon. Dr. Frankel always keeps safety as a priority for his patients, and he takes the time to understand your unique medical and surgical history to make sure you will do well with the surgery.
